Getting Ready for Summer

Oh lord the sun’s out and the temperatures going up and up… which means taking off the layers I’ve been hiding under the last few months and belive me it’s not pretty.

God I hate summer. I’m always exhausted, dehydrated, sun stroked and my legs are always hairy when I want to wear a skirt. And there’s a reason why I’m always in a long sleeve shirt when it’s hot out…

As much as I would love to hide under a thick knitted marquee, I’m trying out this whole new thing where I actually practise doing nice things and pampering myself, all in the name of self-love and all. And also, it’s too damn hot.

At least I don’t have to worry about fake tanning, thanks Indian parents!

Anyway, back to the point of this post, I got asked a few weeks ago if I wanted to try out an electrical wax thingy. and being that I was in dire need of defuzzing and that I love my gadgets I said a big fat yes please!Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 12.10.24 pm

Veet easy wax – electrical roll-On kit. The contents.

If you’ve ever waxed your legs yourself, you know the mental and emotional torture you have to go through.

It’s been 3 years since I’ve waxed, but oh I do remember the ritual of torture. Dont worry, I did defuzz, I shaved where and when needed, with what time motherhood allowed me.

So I gave the Veet Electrical roll-on a go. I don’t know if it was childbirth but I swear this pain was about 80% less than the other home waxing kit I was using.

Basically, you just heat it up for 20 minutes, roll the wax on your skin, and wax off with the cloth strip provided.  I only used one strip for my entire leg because the wax goes on so thin, the cloth doesnt get clogged up and gooey.

No grossness, no mess, and actually so easy. You can also purchase small roller attachments to do bikini and other small areas . I cannot recommend this enough , I honestly love it.

Lucky because I plan to live in skirts all summer.

Which reminds me, better get on to doing a summer wardrobe cull. It’s such a good feeling only having lovely things you actually wear in your wardrobe! more on that soon.

DISCLAIMER: While this is a sponsored post where I got a free product to try out, I would under no circumstances put myself through waxing my legs if I wasnt already a waxer.  I’m not that crazy. Also, I don’t write about products that are rubbish, because I really hate reading reviews of products that are obviously only written for the sake of freebies.

The 7 Step Wardrobe Makeover Challenge. Step 5 : Organize your Space continued

As promised, here is the second part to organising your space.

Tip – If you are shopping for storage, don’t forget to think outside the square, you don’t always have to use a product for what it was intended for. Use a shoe rack to create a double shelf in your linen cupboard for towels or use clear shoe boxes for jewellery, or kid’s Lego/puzzles…etc.

Howard Storage World have so many ideas I feel like making over my entire home, and I think I will!

Here are the rest of my picks to transform your wardrobe:

Small and Large Acrylic Shoe boxes – originally I was going to get the clear plastic boxes but then decided on these because are sturdier and stackable. The draws slide in and out easily and I wanted to use them for things other than only shoes. They’re great for a lot of other items like clutches, chunky bangles, necklaces, scarves, or even arts and craft boxes for a budding little artist.

Some times, or a lot of the times you need a bit of your wardrobe outside the bedroom for convenience. Our small couch used to be a dumping area for jackets bags and scarves and the hallway piled up with everyday shoes. For our lifestyle I realised it made things easier to have these things outside, so thanks to the following 2 brilliant products, our hallway is neater and couch is free!

Shoe Rack – This fits in perfectly under out hall table and on it lives our everyday shoes, leaving room for our 1-year-old to tear up and down the hall.

Hat and Coat Rack – LOVE this product. It’s right by the front door, staring at us as we walk in, leaving us no choice but to hand in our coats and bags. I think it looks pretty good (and no, we are not this colour coordinated or neat:)).

The 7 Step Wardrobe Makeover Challenge – Step 5 – Organize your Space

Welcome to this week’s wardrobe challenge – Organizing your Space. I had a lot of fun with this one – 1, because it’s so much fun to shop online from the couch, and 2, I came across so many wonderful ways to make the most of my space.

The goal here is to make all your clothes and accessories, makeup and shoes easily accessible, and suited to your daily life.

Below are a few tips and ideas that I’ve incorporated into my home and because there are so many, I’m breaking it up, a little now, and the rest in 2 days.

3 Steps to get your wardrobe organised:

  1. Browse Pinterest or google images for ‘organising your wardrobe’. You will be amazed at how many great innovations there are for storing practically every item in your wardrobe.
  2. Decide what kind of look you want and how much money you can spend, if any. For me the most important thing was to have everything easily viewable and accessible. When you have a kid screaming for attention you really don’t have time to search for too long.
  3. Jump online and window shop. Usually you can find everything you need at one place, and look at as many options as possible. My go-to place has been Howard’s storage World for a long time, but never as much as with this wardrobe challenge and complete overhaul of my apartment!

When you’re searching keep in mind the following:

  • Is it easy to use and will still look good in a couple of years without showing too much wear and tear
  • Will it keep your clothing, jewellery or accessories in good condition
  • Do you have space for it (I’ve been known to get too excited and buy something because its pretty but only to realize I have nowhere to keep it)
  • Measure everything and make sure it will fit under your bed or in the closet.

Howard Storage World were kind enough to loan me a few things to try out , and i am so happy with how everything looks in my closet! Especially my jewellery. I’ve been wearing pieces I havent worn in a long time just because I can see it.

Here are a few of my favourite things that make a difference to how your wardrobe looks and feels.

Non Slip Flocked Hangers are made to stop fabric from slipping off. Don’t you hate when everything ends up on the floor as your rifling through? These are great for silks, thin straps or wide necklines.

Clip Hangers are the only way to hang your skirts and trousers, I am not an ironer so there’s no way I’m going to spend that extra few minutes ironing out the crease that folding over a hanger creates.

Cedar balls and Drawer Sachets – Clothes, if unworn for a few weeks can start to smell a bit musty, and the moths and silverfish love to eat through natural fibres such as silks and wools. The cedar balls are great to put in the storage or garment bags of clothes you wont wear for a couple of seasons, and the sachets keep your clothes smelling gorgeous. you can either use them in drawers or put one on a hanger amongst your dresses.

Over the Door Hanger – I used to live in the tiniest flat in Australia and these were such a great way to utilize space. They sit over any door inside your home and are great to hang scarves, long jewellery or bags. So easy to grab what you need when in a rush.

Jewellery Pocket Oprganisers – There’s nothing more time-wasting than trying to untangle long necklaces or finding matching earrings, or worse, forgetting what you actually have in your jewellery draw. These are so great not only because you can see all your wonderful collection, but they keep the jewellery from getting damaged. I like to organise mine in metals – silvers, golds, colours etc…

Acrylic jewellery Drawers – I think from everything that I’ve been working with, these are my favourite. They house my beautiful jewels, and they make me feel the same way as when I walk into a jewellery store and everything sparkles invitingly..’buy me’…’wear me’. I, sadly, love the way jewellery stores display their products, so I love the idea of displaying my precious pieces too. Why not?

The 4 Drawer Jewellery Box

The Deluxe Jewellery Chest – yes, this lives on my bedside table filled with special pieces.

Makeup Storage – A beautiful way to store all your makeup, you can keep all your everyday bits in this, it’s so easy to find brushes and powders. This has made putting on my face that little bit easier in the mornings.

Love my wardrobe now, looks like a very organised person lives here. Right?

And because there are so many things left to talk about, and you’ve probably decided that I go on a little too much about jewellery and moved on to another blog, I am going to stop now and bring you part 2 in a couple of days 🙂

How to apply natural eye makeup like a pro

When I used to hear the term ‘natural makeup’, I used to think that meant no foundation, just a slick of tinted moisturizer at best and maybe some mascara and lip balm. Though I always wondered how some women could look so perfectly beautiful and natural wearing a full face of makeup.

One of my readers recently asked: “I’ve always wanted to know how to get that ‘no makeup’ makeup look on the eyes. Where they look like they are nude and moisturised but you know they have eyeshadow on them”.

So to answer her question and enlighten myself I asked the fabulous Linda west, hair and makeup extraordinaire for some tips and here they are:

– Any eyeshadow with really intense shimmer or glittery frost won’t achieve the desired look.

– Apply an eye primer all over lids to help keep your colours in place. I love the one by Urban Decay.

– Choose a matte eye shadow colour close to your natural skin tone and apply to your lids all the way up to your brow.

– Next, apply a similar, natural colour with a satin finish to your eyelid only. The satin finish will help give that moisturised look.

– For further depth, apply your lightest satin shadow on your eyelid, just above the iris only.  Here you could use a shadow with a little more shimmer if you have one.

– For shape and depth, apply a mid tone along the lash line and into the socket depending on your eye shape. The same colour applied to bottom lashes helps create the look.

– If your eyes need a bit more oomph along the top lashes, wet a thin angle eyeliner brush and apply a deep brown shade very closely to your lash line. Blend with a dry brush.

And remember, avoid frosty shadows and black liquid liner, and remember to blend everything. No demarcation lines for this look!

Hope you enjoyed these tips! For more great advice from Linda you might like to read other posts below:

Quick Fresh Makeup Face in 2 Minutes

I don’t know about you but some days I really hate wearing makeup, and most of the time I just don’t have time. And its on the days when I am struggling with time for myself that I need to put on a presentable face to the world. A face that says I will not be defeated by lack of sleep and a cute but demanding baby, a face that says that I still have some pride left in my appearance even though lord knows if you were to peek in my window and see what I look like at home, you’d run for the hills!

So, after a little chat with the amazing hair and makeup artist Linda West, I got some great tips to apply makeup really quickly.

Firstly, rethink your routine. Instead of applying foundation first, begin with highlighting your features first and you just might find that you can skip the foundation altogether. Truly life changing advice that has changed my makeup routine for good!

  1. Begin with a little smudge of pencil on your upper outer lash line for extra definition.
  2. Curl lashes and apply mascara.
  3. Fill in brows and apply favourite lip colour.
  4. Apply concealer to any dark areas and under eyes. Cover any blemishes or redness on your face.
  5. Apply cheek colour and you’re done.

My philosophy on makeup has always been, to enhance, not to change your features. This new way works perfectly for me and my crazy baby loved up life. Give it a try, you might be surprised.

Hope you found this post useful, for more of Linda’s great work visit her website here, or follow her on Instagram here. If you like this post you might like my search for baby proof makeup here.
