My week In Photographs

What a gorgeous last few days of Winter in Sydney this week has been right? 26 Degrees on Saturday, crazy!

It’s been another busy week, mostly groundhog day revolving around the kid’s sleep, food, entertainment and trying to get some work in between.

And so the story goes. Before I know it it’s another Monday again. I hate Mondays. Not because I have to got to work, but because I feel like I should make some kind of plans for the week. A to do list so that I can be more productive. Oh the pressure. Luckily it’s usually over in a blink of an eye and by Tuesday, well, it’s too late to make plans so I can just give in to the daily routine. Yeay for watching the Gruffalo again!

Here’s what my week looked like. It was an unusually full week, we hardly ever manage to fit so much in!

starring maya first burger

Started off with this little munchkin tasting her first burger and loving it. And that little screwed up face is her latest camera smile style.

starringmaya succulent babiesMy succulent babies seem to be doing well… cant wait to replant them in cute little pots…or maybe I’ll make a succulent garden…  if Maya doesnt destroy them before.

starringmaya dolls house

This is my very special project at the moment. Maya and I found a doll’s house in an ugly but very solid brown wood at a garage sale. I’ve given it a couple of coats with gloss white rustoleum spray paint and I love how it’s turned out. Now on to decorating and furniture making.

starring maya beach

We went to Manly Sea life Sanctuary to see Maya’s beloved Penguins followed by fun at the beach.

Jewellery starring maya

Got a lot of photographing of jewellery done for Instagram … Love doing this. The wizards at the Peter Lang studio have always been so generous letting me borrow whatever I like to photograph. This necklace found its way into my jewellery draw. Oops.

And lastly my favourite part of the week was a wonderful portrait session photographed by Claude. I wanted a beautiful portrait of Maya and I for the blog and for my photo wall at home. This is just a sneak untouched peek but I absolutely LOVE it. Cant wait to show you more once it’s finished.

That’s it for now, tune in for hopefully more exciting things next time. Have a wonderful week! xxx

My Favourite Photograph

There’s a photo of Maya and I taken in our first few minutes together on the wall. Everytime I see it, it brings me straight back into the moment.

starring maya .. first day of maya
This. A few moments after Maya was born. Taken by Claudio Raschella.

You know what I mean by ‘into the moment’ right? I mean everything.

The labour pain and the relief when it was over. What I ate that day, what I wore and how many hours I’d slept during. Clenching my fingernails into Claude’s shoulders and making him bleed. How he just let me.

Most of all it brings back the crazy insane joy of the moment I got to look into my beautiful baby’s eyes. Of holding her wriggling little body in my arms. For the first time.

I felt like I was being given with the whole world on a gilded platter.

It’s crazy to think that a year before this picture was taken, I was just me. I didn’t have a baby to take care of.  I was still able to sleep when I wanted to sleep and go to the movies any time I wanted. I was free in a sense, roaming the world with no real purpose. When I spent my days being gloriously selfish, spending hard-earned money on frivolity, and wasting long hours procrastinating.

When having a child was a distant fantasy, something I would get to one day before my biological clock stopped ticking.

This photograph, It was the moment life changed forever.

Into a life where I get to kiss and cuddle the most beautiful kid I know, of hearing her call me mummy and tell me she loves me. Where I get to watch Disney movies (on repeat) and make up silly dances.. A life where sleep is a luxury as is a clean home.

And I love it.

Now when I think of what it would be like if I had never had Maya, it’s a pretty bland fantasy.

I love this photo most because it puts things into perspective. Reminds me of the most important things.

……

Anyway, that’s enough soppiness for the week. I cant help myself, my sweet baby girl is turning 2 soon and I need time to stop moving so fast!

Do you have a favourite photograph that takes you back somewhere?

What I Want for Mother’s Day

What I want for mother's day title

Ah I’m a sucker for Mother’s day Ads.

You know the ones.

Mum gets woken up in a glorious all white fluffy bed by adorable children in perfectly tousled hair and cute pyjamas with a tray of delicious masterchef worthy breakfast.

Then a montage of cuddles and giggles, present opening, tea in bed, cute cards… running in the park on a sunny day, lying on the grass and being all loved up by her family…

I don’t know about you but Mother’s day when I was a kid was never like that.

Please tell me they exist. I really want to believe that they do.

On the rare mother’s day when my mum wasnt working, my dad would make a big deal, (which I realize now how sweet that was). He’d make some toast and tea,  I’d give her a card I spent days working on , mum would open her present, drink tea and then back to work and blah blah blah. Over in 2 minutes.

But then, that was my mother, not one for too much mooshy mushy family shit.

I remember feeling deflated by her lukewarm enthusiasm  about it all.

Okay Okay I suppose how exciting can socks and cheap perfume be, and for a woman who was studying and working her ass off as a doctor, time was not a luxury she had.

That’s way too much pressure to put on a little person.

My 22 month old daughter told me she loved me for the first time a few weeks ago – thats one of the most special moments i’ll cherish forever, she can just use that reminder every mother’s day and she’s done.

Happy mummy.

I don’t want her to go out and buy presents or to make me breakfast in bed.

I want to make mother’s day about me and her, where we go out and do something special, a mummy daughter date, and yes with lots of cuddles and kisses.

I want the Tv Commercials and the movies.

And, I’m starting a new traditional for my family, where I get to spoil my kid on mother’s day cause it’s my day and I get to do whatever I want, smother the hell out of her!

So, happy mother’s day to all the beautiful mother’s out there. May your day be just like the movies where kids are like sunshine and they don’t poop all the bloody time.

Love, shereen and maya

How To Dress UnMumsy

How not to dress like a mum. What does that even mean? I had heard the term before but I had to sit own and note point by point the meaning of that phrase.
To me, when a mum gets dressed most days she usually:
  • Throws on something comfortable and practical if she’s going to be doing a million errands with her child all day.
  • Puts on something that doesn’t require ironing because there’s no time.
  • Doesn’t have a moment to accessorize before leaving the house, and well, your toddler will just pull it off anyway.
  •  Doesnt have time to colour coordinate so will usually wear all black or throw on a pair of jeans with any old top.
  • Wears the same shoes everyday – and it’s one that most likely is the most comfortable and easy to slip on.
  •  Is lucky if there’s time for a shower let alone makeup so hair is either usually up and makeup is kept to a minimum like lip balm.

Am I on the right track? I’m just going by what goes on in my life and around me. I see a lot of busy mums bustling their babies around, some I envy for having the time to look so great, and some I relate to with all of the above points.

Sure, I make an effort when I have to go to work or have a special event to go to, but there are many days that I just cannot summon the energy or time. On those days I have a few tricks I’ve learned over the years to help me look and feel half decent. Or, at least I hope so…

Here are a few tips you can follow to make yourself feel unmumsy.
  1. Go through your wardrobe and cull . Put clothes that you wear most days in one pile. Any clothing that doesn’t fit or flatter, are stained and damaged need to go. It’s better to have 3 great tops in good condition than to have 20 that look like shit. It might take a whole evening but be ruthless and it will make life easier. If you need more info on this check out my wardrobe makeover challenge.
  2. Create a uniform or some ‘go to’ outfits. It doesn’t matter if you dress in the same style everyday. If it works it works. My uniform at the moment is jeans, black or white shirt, an oversized black poncho, black flats and a pair of great statement earrings.
  3. When shopping look for clothes that have stretch and movement, are machine washable and safe in the dryer.  Pick neutral colours like white, black or grey that will make coordinating easy. Look for good tailoring and ones that flatter your figure.
  4. Every season, spoil yourself with some retail therapy, go to a cheap and cheerful accessory shop like Lovisa or Topshop and buy yourself a few up to date fashion items. A statement necklace, a couple of pairs of earrings, scarves and bags can refresh your mood and wardrobe. Choose any colour you like because they’ll go well with all your neutral clothing. You don’t need a lot, you just need a couple to update your wardrobe.
  5. If you’re not a fan of neutrals, of course get the colours you love to wear and accessorize around that. I knew a girl who only wore red… maybe a black here and there but mostly all red, head to toe. That was her style and she was fab. Be yourself.
  6. Every girl should own a pair of great jeans. Look for one that fits well on the butt, doesn’t sag, and fits at the waist firmly. Well fitted clothes you spend hours shopping for will make you look like fabulous in a flash.
  7. Invest in 1 pair of amazing leather shoes that mould to your feet. Classic loafers, ankle boots and a pair of sneakers will be all that you need. Rotate them around. Pairing a pair of black loafers with jeans and a white button down shirt is the ultimate chic.
  8. If you have great skin you wont have to wear too much makeup but if you need to then work out a quick routine that works for you and make it happen every morning before you leave. You can try this 2 minute makeup routine that works like a dream for me. All you need is a good foundation and concealer, mascara, bit of cream blush and lip gloss and you’re done.

How To Use Accessories To Hide Stains On Your Clothing

HI

By now you get it that I have a toddler – hence the blog name.

At almost 2 years she is a crazy beautiful ball of energy and cheekiness who loves to wipe her sticky little hands on everything in the house. And me.

A lot of times I leave the house and don’t realise I have food stains on my clothing until it’s too late and whilst I have considerably lowered my cleanliness standards, there are limits.

Especially when one has to work and convince the client that I in fact am an expert in the wardrobe/fashion Industry.

Here are a few tips to help you look pristine when you don’t have the option to change.

1. Keep a pack of wet ones or baby wipes handy either in your car or handbag. It’s great for wiping away crusty bits of food or snot that your darling wipes on you. Works on clothing, shoes, bags, even your jewellery.

starringmaya wet ones

If that doesn’t work….

2. I always have a scarf wherever I go. I keep one in my bag, about 3 in my car, and a few in a handy spot at home. They are fantastic to hide pesky stains, just drape in any fashion you can create to cover it.

starringmaya scarves 1
I save this style for when I need to hide the whole top. A large square scarf works well.
starringmaya scarf 2
Basically drape your scarf in any way it takes to cover up

3. Brooches are not just for Chanel suits and Nannas. Depending on where the stain is, a brooch can not only cover it, but can add a bit of glamour to your outfit. Great way to accessorize a boring top!

starringmaya matching If you can get your hands on a pair pf matching brooches, they look fantastic worn this way. A little bit of 40’s ish glamour.

There’s nothing you can do about your sticky darling giving you kisses and cuddles, why would you want to?! Such delicious moments are worth getting a little dirty for 🙂

If you have any other ingenious tips please share! Tell me in the comments below.

PS. I got a bit excited with the selfies as you can see…. if there was a way I could explain without pictures I would, believe me!

Rainy day Playdough fun

If you live in Sydney, then you and your little ones are probably going as crazy as we are… not even jumping in puddles will be safe in this crazy weather!!

Maya and I just made our own play dough. Why? I got sick of the shop bought ones getting hard and lumpy.

We tried the no cook and the cooked version, and the cooked one turned out a hundred times better, even though the recipes were both similar.

It’s pliable, soft and not sticky at all. Whereas the other ones stuck to everything.

And the fact that I can sit here while my toddler plays with it is proof enough that it was totally worth it! Yippee!.

It took about 5 minutes to make so hope you try this easy play dough recipe via parentingchaos.com and enjoy playing!
