3 tips for Incorporating Statement Jewellery into your Life

If you follow my Instagram account, then you’d by know that I’m obsessed with 2 things in my life. Maya and Jewellery.

I have a thing for big bold bright jewellery, and there is never such a thing as too much in my world when accessorizing.

I realize not everyone is as hardcore as me:-

  • When I have to travel I have a special case for my jewellery
  • When there is a jewellery sale my heart starts to palpitate
  • When I know there is a set to the ring I just bought, I go a little crazy and want it all
  • If I cant see it from a mile away I don’t want it
  • When I get dressed I choose my jewellery first
  • I think of jewellery as Art – of which I am an avid collector.

It wasn’t always this way. I remember during the London backpacking days, I wore the tiniest earrings and ring you ever did see. But when you’re living out of a suitcase with not much money to buy new outfits you start searching for ways to improvise. And so my jewellery obsession began.

I found it to be like anything else new, all you have to do is like it, want to wear it, put it on and get on with life.

So here are my 3 tips for incorporating statement jewellery into your life.

  1. Start with wearing only one bold piece to stand out and keep the rest minimal. You could wear a gorgeous statement necklace and keep your earrings/rings/bracelets small or wear none at all.

  2. Pair bold jewellery with simple outfits. If you’re wearing a lot of prints and patterns, it can be hard to find something that goes if you are not a seasoned jewellery wearer. On the other hand if you are wearing, say a white shirt or tee with jeans, virtually any statement piece would look amazing. Keep it Simple.

  3. Choose jewels within your own personal style. If you only wear silver, then go for a statement piece in silver so you feel more comfortable. If you’re favourite colour is blue, try a turquoise piece. Or, if you’ve only ever worn earrings and no other piece of jewellery, then just start with statement earrings.

I wear bold jewellery because I love looking at it, I love the way it feels. I love it period. I never for a minute ever wondered if it suited me or not, I just wear it because I like it.

Go ahead and try it. Do it with conviction and confidence. Take a selfie even!  No one will know it’s your first time anyway. They’re all too busy taking their own selfies

My week In Photographs

What a gorgeous last few days of Winter in Sydney this week has been right? 26 Degrees on Saturday, crazy!

It’s been another busy week, mostly groundhog day revolving around the kid’s sleep, food, entertainment and trying to get some work in between.

And so the story goes. Before I know it it’s another Monday again. I hate Mondays. Not because I have to got to work, but because I feel like I should make some kind of plans for the week. A to do list so that I can be more productive. Oh the pressure. Luckily it’s usually over in a blink of an eye and by Tuesday, well, it’s too late to make plans so I can just give in to the daily routine. Yeay for watching the Gruffalo again!

Here’s what my week looked like. It was an unusually full week, we hardly ever manage to fit so much in!

Started off with this little munchkin tasting her first burger and loving it. And that little screwed up face is her latest camera smile style.

starringmaya dolls house

This is my very special project at the moment. Maya and I found a doll’s house in an ugly but very solid brown wood at a garage sale. I’ve given it a couple of coats with gloss white rustoleum spray paint and I love how it’s turned out. Now on to decorating and furniture making.

Got a lot of photographing of jewellery done for Instagram … Love doing this. The wizards at the Peter Lang studio have always been so generous letting me borrow whatever I like to photograph. This necklace found its way into my jewellery draw. Oops.

And lastly my favourite part of the week was a wonderful portrait session photographed by Claude. I wanted a beautiful portrait of Maya and I for the blog and for my photo wall at home. This is just a sneak untouched peek but I absolutely LOVE it. Cant wait to show you more once it’s finished.

That’s it for now, tune in for hopefully more exciting things next time. Have a wonderful week! xxx

Peter Lang Winter Collection

For the last 3 weeks I’ve had on my dining table, bags and bags of all the sublime jewellery from the new Peter lang winter collection. Available in stores now and online soon.

Take it all home and play they said.

Keep it as long as you need they said.

Well.

I played, I road tested some and had a lot of fun.

I couldn’t possibly put ALL the pieces in one post so this is just part one. My personal favourite has to be the yellow stone pieces from the Tribal collection.

Birthday

Happy monday to you and happy birthday to me!

I love birthdays. I look forward to it with the enthusiasm of a little kid every single year.

I don’t see it as one year closer to old age or ‘the end’, on the contrary. I see it as another year notched up on my belt that I can be proud of and another year to look forward to whatever it may bring.

So to the little girl a long time ago who dreamed of getting older (and wiser), who thought that 30 was the oldest you could ever get, happy birthday and things are looking good because you’ve made it to 38!

So bring on the cake, the candle, the balloons, cuddles from my little love and I’ll have me the perfect birth day yet!

But of course a shopaholic like me can’t resist a wish list, so here is a little roundup of what I wish I had in my shopping bag today.

Colouring my Winter

By about the middle of winter the novelty of coats, jumpers and scarves start to wear off and I ache for a little bit of sunshine in my wardrobe.

A few weeks ago I walked into the Peter Lang studio wearing my new scarf from Bauhaus and this range of stunning jewellery was on display at reception. It’s a match made in heaven with my scarf and my need to brighten things up a little. (You probably think I live at Peter lang but I promise I do need to go in there for work quite a lot!)

I love the colour combination of this range, it adds a little sparkle and warmth to my everyday blacks.

Blues and oranges are my new happy colours for this winter, whats yours?

Mixing Metals

I remember being told never to mix my metals when accessorising. I can’t quite remember who i learned this from but it stayed with me for a long time. Lately though I’ve begun to question it, because honestly, how can I be expected to choose just one when I have such a lovely mixed collection?!

So, I’ve thrown in the old way and embraced the new trend of doing whatever feels and looks right at the time.

Here’s a few of my tips:

– Choose one colour that is the hero and mix in other metals to contrast or compliment  – for example, pick 3 or 4 gold bracelets/bangles and throw in a couple of silver ones the same size or smaller.

– Have a common theme that binds all the pieces together – maybe your silver necklace and bronze earrings have a similar coloured stone in them, or your rings and bracelets all have a tribal design feature etc.. even layering fine chains in 3 or 4 different metals can look fantastic.

– If you can find a piece that already has 2 or more metals than joy because you can pair it with pretty much anything.

The bracelet of all bracelets with mixed metal charms and coloured stones – I wear mine with gold earrings and plain silver rings one day,and change it up the next. It’s such a versatile piece that goes with absolutely every outfit from casual to dressy. This amazing arm candy is by Peter Lang.

I love this stunning Peter Lang statement necklace, another example of the perfect mixed metal. Wear with this season’s stripes or lace paired with either jewelled earrings or silver and gold earrings and cuffs.
