3 tips for Incorporating Statement Jewellery into your Life

If you follow my Instagram account, then you’d by know that I’m obsessed with 2 things in my life. Maya and Jewellery.

I have a thing for big bold bright jewellery, and there is never such a thing as too much in my world when accessorizing.

I realize not everyone is as hardcore as me:-

  • When I have to travel I have a special case for my jewellery
  • When there is a jewellery sale my heart starts to palpitate
  • When I know there is a set to the ring I just bought, I go a little crazy and want it all
  • If I cant see it from a mile away I don’t want it
  • When I get dressed I choose my jewellery first
  • I think of jewellery as Art – of which I am an avid collector.

It wasn’t always this way. I remember during the London backpacking days, I wore the tiniest earrings and ring you ever did see. But when you’re living out of a suitcase with not much money to buy new outfits you start searching for ways to improvise. And so my jewellery obsession began.

I found it to be like anything else new, all you have to do is like it, want to wear it, put it on and get on with life.

So here are my 3 tips for incorporating statement jewellery into your life.

  1. Start with wearing only one bold piece to stand out and keep the rest minimal. You could wear a gorgeous statement necklace and keep your earrings/rings/bracelets small or wear none at all.

  2. Pair bold jewellery with simple outfits. If you’re wearing a lot of prints and patterns, it can be hard to find something that goes if you are not a seasoned jewellery wearer. On the other hand if you are wearing, say a white shirt or tee with jeans, virtually any statement piece would look amazing. Keep it Simple.

  3. Choose jewels within your own personal style. If you only wear silver, then go for a statement piece in silver so you feel more comfortable. If you’re favourite colour is blue, try a turquoise piece. Or, if you’ve only ever worn earrings and no other piece of jewellery, then just start with statement earrings.

I wear bold jewellery because I love looking at it, I love the way it feels. I love it period. I never for a minute ever wondered if it suited me or not, I just wear it because I like it.

Go ahead and try it. Do it with conviction and confidence. Take a selfie even!  No one will know it’s your first time anyway. They’re all too busy taking their own selfies

Wardrobe Tips – Cool Gadgets to keep your Clothes Looking Awesome

starring maya - cool gadgets to keep your clothes looking awesome

Welcome to another ‘Wardrobe Tip’ Post! I have so much fun doing these posts, I cant explain it. Give me some cool gadgets and some clothes and I’m a happy woman! I’m on a mission to try out everything ever made to do with clothes.

I figure if you’re going to spend a fortune on gorgeous expensive things, you may as well know what there is available to keep them looking as new and fresh as they did the day you bought them, for as long as possible.

Before I start, just a quick note — In order for me to write my ‘wardrobe tips’ posts, I needed to test and review a few products. I contacted the amazing Howard Storage World and they were only too happy to send me some things that I chose from their online store. Even though it’s a sponsored post, I only try out and write about the products I honestly love and would recommend to you.

So here is my list of Cool gadgets to keep your clothes looking awesome:

  1. Use a pressing cloth when ironing. Ever notice when you iron linen or dark fabrics like navy or black you get shiny marks which basically ruin the look of a beautiful garment. Using a pressing cloth protects the fabric. I have this fantastic mesh pressing cloth I got from Howard Storage World, which unfortunately is all sold out, but you can also use a piece of thin cotton like muslin. starringmaya - cool gadgets for clothers - mesh pressing cloth
  2. A lint shaver is a lifesaver, especially during winter when wools and knits are in high rotation. You can either use a regular shaving blade and literally shave the pills off as you would your legs, or use this awesome lint shaver. This snazzy contraption does the work in a fraction of the time, is cheap and so much fun to use. I highlyrecommend it.

Here is one I prepared earlier – the top sleeve is one I used the shaver on and bottom is how it came out of the dryer. Big difference!

  3. A sticky lint remover. If you don’t have one of these, you dont know what you’re missing! I swear it’ll change your life. Especially if you wear black a lot or have pets  (kids). Nothing says ‘I couldnt be bothered’ then wearing black with crap all over it all. Not a good look. Which is why I literally have one in every room and handbag.lint roller - starringmaya
  4. Dryer balls. Yeah I know, I was like WTF when I first read about these but I now see the light. Clothes go into the dryer as normal, and come out soft and fluffy. These little dryer balls basically just gently pummel and fluff up all the fibres in the cloth as it dries. Perfect for stiffish cottons/linens and bulky items like pillows and blankets.dryer balls, starring maya
  5. Damp rid. It drives me crazy when I’ve worked really hard putting my seasonal clothes away in storage only to open it up months later to smelly mouldy messes. If you live in a place with little circulation, these are fantastic for sucking up any moisture in the air, leaving your clothes nice and dry.damp rid - starring maya

That’s it for now folks. Hope you got something out of this post and if you have anything else to add, PLEASE let me know so I can go and check it out:)

Why Women Find it Hard to Change Thier Wardrobe

Sometimes I’ll meet a client who wants a different wardrobe but she doesn’t want to change. They like the idea of a new style or look but when it comes to actually creating a new wardrobe for them they can’t bring themselves to go through with it.

Why is it so hard for some women to change their wardrobe style?

I have a few theories. I could be wrong, has happened many many times before so tell me to shut up anytime.

Do any of these reasons/excuses sound familiar?:

  • You try on lots of styles but insist you don’t like anything new.
  • You don’t think it will have any real benefit so what’s the point.
  • It can be too expensive.
  • You don’t want to stray far from what you normally wear.
  • You’re afraid that you’ll become different inside – for eg you work with children and are compassionate and dressing too well might change that perception.
  • you’re worried your new clothes will make people think you care more about yourself than anything important.

I get it, I really do. But you have to get over it!

Having confidence in yourself in how you look is a pretty powerful thing, whether you are into high fashion or alternative, it doesn’t matter. If you truly  don’t like it, do something about it.

Change is not easy.

I grew up in a home and community where we were encouraged to take pride in our appearances, but to never seem that you tried too hard. Never wear too much makeup, or really fancy clothes because people will think that you’re vain and conceited. Look good but look plain, don’t try too hard but do your hair. Oh is that a new coat? Look’s expensive – how lucky you must be not to have to worry about anything but pretty things for yourself. Aka – you’re vain youre selfish… who do you think you are?

Pretty fucked up yes?

It’s taken me a long time to get over it, and still I wonder if sometimes people see me as self-centred because I splashed out on expensive shoes, or even just new shoes and I’m pretty sure my mother thinks I’m substituting the baby’s food money for my jewellery addiction.

Anyway, to change your wardrobe is not a simple matter of buying new clothes and dressing like one of your idols. You have to go through a bit of a  psychological change.

You got to be prepared to let go of the old and see someone new in the mirror.

You have to let go of the notion that people might think you are now a follower or a fashionista (god I hate that word) and not yourself.

I once had a client, who after a day of buying beautiful clothes, stop when it came to accessories  because it would make her look TOO good. Yes really.

Whatever your reason is for wanting a change in your wardrobe, make sure it’s a good reason, somewhere along the lines of it giving you more confidence, making you happy etc, and hold on to it.

And know that even though your outside appearance will change, you will still be who you are.

Life’s too short to live with what you hate.

What do you think? Do you find it hard to make the changes that you really want? Tell me in the comments below.

What’s your stand on Black Bras Under White Tops?

For me its a huge NO NO. Just like white shoes.

But, like with anything there are exceptions, and I think today’s fashion is a lot more expressive and individual and really, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.

This is how I see it.

A black bra can be incredible tacky if you:
  • Have pale skin where the bra will stand out like crazy
  • Are wearing a collared shirt at work
  • Dressed for a conservative/classy event like a wedding
  • Are wearing a beautiful white top that you want to highlight,  but instead all people are seeing are your boobs.
starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
Would have been a great classic outfit with the right bra
starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
A white bra is an ever bigger no no

The only times you CAN get away with wearing a black bra under a white top is:
  • If you have dark skin and there are no flesh coloured bras that match your skin.
  • When your top is so sheer that you can see skin and a black bra can look quite edgy.
  • You are under the age of 30 and have a healthy dose of body confidence
  • If you are Carrie Bradshaw
starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
I think this works – A flesh bra would have been visible and unattractive
starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
If you have the figure then why not! This cut on the armhole needs a black bra
starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
As with the above pic, I think this works if you are young and have fabulous body confidence.

When in doubt, don’t.

Wear flesh coloured bras, that way it’s you and your outfit that commands attention not your underwear.

starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
You cant see the flesh bra and the top looks great

Unfortunately in Australia there are not a lot of dark-skinned flesh coloured bra options, which is why I will sometimes wear a black bra under a thickly woven fabric, but if it’s sheer, I’d rather go for a black singlet.

If you must wear a black bra, go for a bralet which covers more flesh and then the outfit is classier and isn’t about inviting people to look at your boobs, but at your ingenious styling and layering abilities.

starringmaya black bra under white top where do you stand?
Bralets are Perfect for Sheer tops if you want to wear Black inside.

Where do you stand? Is the rule too outdated or do you think it still applies? Tell me in the comments below 🙂

How To Dress UnMumsy

How not to dress like a mum. What does that even mean? I had heard the term before but I had to sit own and note point by point the meaning of that phrase.
To me, when a mum gets dressed most days she usually:
  • Throws on something comfortable and practical if she’s going to be doing a million errands with her child all day.
  • Puts on something that doesn’t require ironing because there’s no time.
  • Doesn’t have a moment to accessorize before leaving the house, and well, your toddler will just pull it off anyway.
  •  Doesnt have time to colour coordinate so will usually wear all black or throw on a pair of jeans with any old top.
  • Wears the same shoes everyday – and it’s one that most likely is the most comfortable and easy to slip on.
  •  Is lucky if there’s time for a shower let alone makeup so hair is either usually up and makeup is kept to a minimum like lip balm.

Am I on the right track? I’m just going by what goes on in my life and around me. I see a lot of busy mums bustling their babies around, some I envy for having the time to look so great, and some I relate to with all of the above points.

Sure, I make an effort when I have to go to work or have a special event to go to, but there are many days that I just cannot summon the energy or time. On those days I have a few tricks I’ve learned over the years to help me look and feel half decent. Or, at least I hope so…

Here are a few tips you can follow to make yourself feel unmumsy.
  1. Go through your wardrobe and cull . Put clothes that you wear most days in one pile. Any clothing that doesn’t fit or flatter, are stained and damaged need to go. It’s better to have 3 great tops in good condition than to have 20 that look like shit. It might take a whole evening but be ruthless and it will make life easier. If you need more info on this check out my wardrobe makeover challenge.
  2. Create a uniform or some ‘go to’ outfits. It doesn’t matter if you dress in the same style everyday. If it works it works. My uniform at the moment is jeans, black or white shirt, an oversized black poncho, black flats and a pair of great statement earrings.
  3. When shopping look for clothes that have stretch and movement, are machine washable and safe in the dryer.  Pick neutral colours like white, black or grey that will make coordinating easy. Look for good tailoring and ones that flatter your figure.
  4. Every season, spoil yourself with some retail therapy, go to a cheap and cheerful accessory shop like Lovisa or Topshop and buy yourself a few up to date fashion items. A statement necklace, a couple of pairs of earrings, scarves and bags can refresh your mood and wardrobe. Choose any colour you like because they’ll go well with all your neutral clothing. You don’t need a lot, you just need a couple to update your wardrobe.
  5. If you’re not a fan of neutrals, of course get the colours you love to wear and accessorize around that. I knew a girl who only wore red… maybe a black here and there but mostly all red, head to toe. That was her style and she was fab. Be yourself.
  6. Every girl should own a pair of great jeans. Look for one that fits well on the butt, doesn’t sag, and fits at the waist firmly. Well fitted clothes you spend hours shopping for will make you look like fabulous in a flash.
  7. Invest in 1 pair of amazing leather shoes that mould to your feet. Classic loafers, ankle boots and a pair of sneakers will be all that you need. Rotate them around. Pairing a pair of black loafers with jeans and a white button down shirt is the ultimate chic.
  8. If you have great skin you wont have to wear too much makeup but if you need to then work out a quick routine that works for you and make it happen every morning before you leave. You can try this 2 minute makeup routine that works like a dream for me. All you need is a good foundation and concealer, mascara, bit of cream blush and lip gloss and you’re done.

How To Use Accessories To Hide Stains On Your Clothing

HI

By now you get it that I have a toddler – hence the blog name.

At almost 2 years she is a crazy beautiful ball of energy and cheekiness who loves to wipe her sticky little hands on everything in the house. And me.

A lot of times I leave the house and don’t realise I have food stains on my clothing until it’s too late and whilst I have considerably lowered my cleanliness standards, there are limits.

Especially when one has to work and convince the client that I in fact am an expert in the wardrobe/fashion Industry.

Here are a few tips to help you look pristine when you don’t have the option to change.

1. Keep a pack of wet ones or baby wipes handy either in your car or handbag. It’s great for wiping away crusty bits of food or snot that your darling wipes on you. Works on clothing, shoes, bags, even your jewellery.

starringmaya wet ones

If that doesn’t work….

2. I always have a scarf wherever I go. I keep one in my bag, about 3 in my car, and a few in a handy spot at home. They are fantastic to hide pesky stains, just drape in any fashion you can create to cover it.

starringmaya scarves 1
I save this style for when I need to hide the whole top. A large square scarf works well.
starringmaya scarf 2
Basically drape your scarf in any way it takes to cover up

3. Brooches are not just for Chanel suits and Nannas. Depending on where the stain is, a brooch can not only cover it, but can add a bit of glamour to your outfit. Great way to accessorize a boring top!

starringmaya cluster
starringmaya matching If you can get your hands on a pair pf matching brooches, they look fantastic worn this way. A little bit of 40’s ish glamour.

There’s nothing you can do about your sticky darling giving you kisses and cuddles, why would you want to?! Such delicious moments are worth getting a little dirty for 🙂

If you have any other ingenious tips please share! Tell me in the comments below.

PS. I got a bit excited with the selfies as you can see…. if there was a way I could explain without pictures I would, believe me!
